Slave Life at Ben Lomond, Manassas, VA
Black History Month Post:
Photos taken at the excellent "Slave Life at Ben Lomond Tour" on February 26, 2012.
The Prince William County Historic Preservation staff here were superb! I was really impressed with their level of knowledge about Northern Virginia slavery and the Civil War. Ben Lomond goes right up on my list of sites that I would recommend to a visit to.
The slave cabin is AN ORIGINAL. But, keep in mind the cabin is not in its original location, staff informed me that it was moved across the property at an earlier date (see visuals below).
Photo of the slave cabin being moved (taken in the Ben Lomond gift shop):

Sotterley Plantation, Hollywood, MD
Have you been to Sotterley?
I met the Sotterley staff 2 years ago when we both spoke at the National Park Service's Network To Freedom conference. The topic, of course, was the Underground Railroad, but the Sotterley folks also talked about the property's original restored slave cabin [in situ & one of the only cabins still accessible to the public.] Last weekend I finally got my chance to journey down to Southern Maryland and see the site. What a marvelous place it was. Simply fantastic!
Really...you should go.
(The photos are a bit too big for the website layout, but I felt too big was better than too small.)
